About Martin

Martin Powell

Martin has worked in healthcare for nearly 30 years. During his paramedic career he became interested in the ways staff coped with exposure to trauma and he developed training programmes for staff to learn how to support each other through the use of counselling and mediation skills. Martin is passionate about quality, equality and ensuring people get the help they deserve when they need it.

He qualified as a counsellor in 2004 (MSc. Therapeutic Counselling) and has undertaken many and varied supplemental trainings since; including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Supervision and Mediation. He successfully led a team of counsellors as a senior manager in two different hospices, winning a national award from the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy for adapting services in 2012. He now works as a Director in a well-known London hospice, with responsibility for all patient services.

Martin’s PhD research focussed on resilience, due to a lifelong interest in how people are affected by life’s challenges. He understands that everyone will face adversity in their lives and believes this often creates opportunities to thrive, not just survive.
